Get started:

Change the course of your family dynamics with our time-tested parenting strategies.

Welcome to the Kennedy Krieger Parenting Website

We are offering you access to brief tutorials related to the reasons why you are seeking an appointment with us. Tutorials are designed from evidenced-based procedures and informed by over three decades of successes by the clinical staff and faculty of the Behavioral Psychology Department of the Institute. Tutorial topics will continuously be updated and added over the next 6-12 months.

We are offering this to you at no cost:

  • To provide high-quality, evidence-based help until we can get you scheduled for an appointment. Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented demand for Behavioral Health services since the pandemic, this wait is longer than we would like.
  • To help us evaluate and improve this educational resource. Toward that end, please provide regular updates via text message on your child’s behavior and respond to the surveys that we will send to you. These data will help us improve this program and will be shared with your child’s clinician when you are scheduled.

All Parents are Teachers

Our parenting resources are designed to support you as you navigate your child’s development and help you solve common behavior concerns.

You are the Role Model

Children can learn good behavior from their parents, so we focus on teaching you how to teach your child.

It's Never Too Early to Start

We believe in using effective, tested parenting strategies as soon as possible in your parenting journey.

Reward the Behavior You Want

Also known as Differential Reinforcement, the best way to change behavior is to reward the behavior you want to see—and not reward the behavior you don’t.

Identify the Problem

Problem behavior is almost always an attempt to communicate a child’s want or need.

Identify the Purpose

All behavior serves a purpose. Usually children either want your attention, want to avoid doing something, or want something that was taken away.

Determine a Treatment

The best treatment will be based on the purpose of the behavior.

Change Their Behavior

Once you know the purpose of their behavior, make sure their need is addressed only following “good” behavior.

Our Resources Get Results

Supported by decades of success at Kennedy Krieger Institute, our resources are based on scientific studies and validated techniques developed by national experts in child behavior.
